The Sixth Vital Sign?

Studies are hyperlinked to any underlined text.

Is a guy's vitality tied to his virility? If you ask him, well... don't. Let me just tell you that for most guys it's all rolled up into one. Few young men ever give their potency a second thought. It's the construct of being a man. They just know it's there. Unlike women, who are well tuned in to their reproductive parameters, men aren't. If he can deliver the payload to the designated target with regularity and a smile, he's good. Or is he?

A study in 2016 found that men who were diagnosed with low or no measurable sperm had a 30% higher risk of developing diabetes, 48% higher for heart disease, 48% higher for alcohol abuse, and 67% higher risk for drug abuse.

A 2014 Stanford University study looked at 12,000 men and found that those with two or more abnormal semen parameters which they consider "severely impaired" semen, had a 2.3-fold higher risk of dying in the 7.7-year follow up period than those with normal semen quality. (The mean age of these men at the end of the study was only 44 to rule out age being the cause of impaired sperm.)

There are plenty of studies.

Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say that sperm quality CAUSED these diseases or deaths, but the association is pretty strong between poor semen quality and poor health outcomes. What does that mean? Well, semen quality could be what we call a surrogate marker for something else that's causing sick outcomes. This is a call-out especially to men under 40 to get a sperm analysis. Turns out it can be a report card on your vitality AND your virility. Find an andrology clinic near you, ask you doctor or check out @givelegacyinc (no affiliation).
